Drama

Drama is offered as an elective subject at Concord High School from years 9-12. The subject is taught with an ensemble theatre focus where the emphasis is being part of a whole team. Students in years 7-8 are welcome to become involved in the Technical crew, which organises and operates lighting and sound for the various productions which take place across the school year. Excursions to view live theatre are also an important part of the student experience.

Drama is run as an elective School Certificate 200 hour course which runs throughout years 9 and 10. Year 9 students study improvisation, origins and history of theatre, principles of characterisation, theatrical styles, playbuilding skills, and script analysis techniques. Students also perform in a group show during the Year 9 course of study.

In year 10 the students analyse and perform individual monologues and deepen their understanding of characterisation. In term 2 the focus is on a group performance where students are responsible not only for the performances but alll design aspects of the show. The year ends with a 'scaled down' experience of the HSC year, where students have a choice of Individual projects and must also be involved in a group self devised performance.

Students may of course take Drama in the senior years without having studied the subject as a junior student. In the year 11 Preliminary  course there is a focus on foundation skills of acting and playbuilding, exploration of major theatrical styles, script analysis, as well as gaining an understanding the elements of drama which compose an effective performance.

In year 12 the students may choose their individual project from a range of subjects including performance, costume design, set design, lighting design, portfolio of theatre criticism, director's project, or producing a video drama. There is also a compulsory group self devised performance. These more practical components of the course are viewed and assessed by independent examiners form the Board of Studies.  The written exam for the HSC focuses on personal experience and knowledge of texts from 2 different areas -  Australian Drama, and an elective subject selected by the teacher.

Drama is designed to enrich the student's experience and awareness of the culture around them, and to appreciate the results of the creative process. Drama can help to develop personal confidence, and assist in the development of public speaking and presentation skills which are an increasing part of the modern business world.

Drama classes take place in the school theatrette, which is a purpose built performance space equipped with both lighting and sound systems.
